What is Dehydration?

Dehydrated skin refers to skin that lacks water. The lack of water content could be from dehydration throughout the body as well as dry or low-humidity air since there’s less moisture in the air for your skin to absorb.

Dry or Dehydrated skin?

Is dry skin the same as dehydrated skin? The simple answer is No. The difference between the two is that while, dry skin lacks oil, or sebum dehydrated skin lacks water. This means that it’s possible for someone with any skin type to suffer from the condition of dehydrated skin.

Dehydrated skin is a skin condition that can be cured while dry skin is a skin type you may be genetically predisposed to. This implies that while dry skin is simply a fact of life for many people because it’s the type of skin they were born with, dehydrated skin is a temporary condition with specific causes and specific treatments.

Now that you understand what dehydrated skin is, let’s look at how to identify it and distinguish it from other skin conditions.

Symptoms of Dehydrated skin?

Dehydrated skin often results in a noticeable change in your complexion. You may notice that your skin lacks radiance, it looks dull or your skin tone is uneven. You may also find that your skin has become itchy without any redness, irritation, or any sign that would account for it.

Fine lines,  wrinkles, sunken eyes, dark circles under your eyes, and “shadows” under the eyes or around the nose are other common signs of dehydrated skin.

One of the easiest ways to tell if your skin is dehydrated is by performing the “pinch test” on yourself.  Pinch a small portion of your skin between your thumb and index finger, and then look at it closely if it takes more than a second for your skin  to “bounce back” after you let go, your skin might be dehydrated

This is because dehydrated skin loses its natural suppleness and elasticity.

Causes Of Dehydrated Skin

The simplest cause of dehydrated skin is simply that your daily water intake is inadequate.  Other causes could be ;

Stress: Normally, the skin does a good job of keeping moisture in and keeping irritants, pollutants, and allergens out. However, Stress can cause your body to overproduce a hormone called cortisol that throws off the balance of your skin’s natural oils, inhibiting your skin’s barrier function.

Wrong Skincare Regime

If you’re using the wrong skincare products for your skin type, they can end up doing more harm than good and cause your skin to become dehydrated.

Aggravating ingredients (denatured alcohol, for example), synthetic fragrances, or over-exfoliating can throw off your skin’s balance and weaken its barrier which can lead to dehydrated skin.

Other factors that can lead to dehydrated skin include UV rays from the sun, chlorine in pools, and salt in the ocean. All these can also negatively impact hydration.

Treatments For Dehydrated Skin

Has your dehydration sin been caused by insufficient water intake, stress, or the wrong skincare regime? Here is the good news; Dehydrated skin can be fixed.

To replenish hydration, It is important to drink plenty of water. Eating more plant-based foods, like fruits and vegetables, and getting enough rest can help with dehydrated skin, as well.

It’s also important to treat your dehydrated skin topically.

If the skin is dehydrated but not dry, hyaluronic acid should help hydrate the skin by binding to water, and the skin barrier should help to lock in this moisture. You can shop our range of products here.
